Tomorrow, I go in for Lithotripsy to break up a stone in my left kidney which is creating blockage. This blockage has, from my perception, caused the left kidney to swell to more than twice the size of its healthy right counterpart. It still works, but it takes a little longer to do what it needs to do. I had a series of intravenous dye X-rays two weeks ago and I actually got to watch the progression of an iodine dye through my system. Now, none of the stones have passed, so I have very little pain. It's when they move that pain happens. They're just staying where they are, causing little issue.
They tell me that lithotripsy is a non invasive procedure, but they're going to put me under general anesthesia, so I don't feel any pain. I'm told by the doctor that when I'm finished, it's going to feel like I've been kicked in the side. And a few days of pissing sand and blood, I should be on the up and up. I've taken the last 2 months off from Aikido, and it's depressing. I haven't really done anything active in fear of dropping a kidney stone into my ureter. That's a painful trip to the ER.
I'm taking Thursday off for the surgery, and 3 sick days on Friday, Saturday & Sunday to recover. If you haven't seen me, talked to me, and you care to do those things, Those days will be prime opportunity to find me. I'll be spending a lot of time with Dawn this weekend. She's even taking a half day on Thursday to take me home from surgery (so amazing!). But make an offer to hang this weekend and we'll consider it ;)

My throat's been killing me lately. Well, not so much 'killing me' as 'non-compliant.' I lost my voice, but I'm slowly regaining it. I was recommended (by the mom of one of my trombone students, no less) to try a hot totty before bed.
Before you ask, a hot totty is a hot beverage. Not a sex thing no one told you about.
Apparently it's a home-remedy for throat problems in her Missourian family, and she decided to pass it on to me. I've been wondering for years what one is, and now, in a stroke of luck, I learned that it's whiskey, lemon, and honey.
Wait a sec. It's a HOT drink. What is there to heat up? You heat the whiskey, and the booze is going to cook out. And I don't trust myself to heat enough honey and lemon to a thin enough solution to add booze to it. Just doesn't seem right. A quick google search yielded using hot tea. Eureka.
---Note: This drink knocked my ass out right in the middle of writing this blog. I'm finally getting back to it, 2 days later.---
Here's my recipe:
-One cup Tazo Calm Herbal Tea
-One tablespoon (or so) of honey.
-One slice of lemon
-One shot, Woodford Reserve Bourbon
So, steep a cup of tea (herbal, in this case), add a tablespoon of honey, squeeze a slice of lemon into it, then pour in a shot of whiskey. Drink it before it gets anything less than hot. I think by the time mine got slightly under warm, I passed out.
I don't know if it had any effect on my throat, but my voice is decidedly better.

My buddy, Dave Press, just became a staff writer for Broken Frontier, a comic news site. He's been working on an article about the future Wizard magazine and it's relevance to the comic medium. Check it out. It's a two-part piece, with what I've linked to being the first. It's really interesting so far & I'm looking forward to the next installment. There's even a quote or two from little ol' me in it. Enjoy Dave's hard work, and think about how our takes on the industry have changed since we were kids.

Over the last 24 hours, I've had some crazy fucking sickness. I can't figure out where it would've come from, except that chicken burrito from Chipotle yesterday. Serious fever preceded by serious chills. I'm tired, light-headed, and I've had the worst headache I can remember. Yesterday, my fever was as high as 101.6°. When I went to bed, 100.3°. After work today, 98.3°. I just woke up from a 2 hour nap, and who knows where I'm at now.

I'm so tired. It's 230a, and I've just finished my laundry. Last night was a late night. Tuesday night, I didn't sleep at all, save a combined total of 90 intermittent minutes (I'm not complaining, mind you). Got hurt in Aikido on Wednesday, but not bad. Enough to be uncomfortable. Tuesday night was lame at work, but Wednesday and tonight were aces. Last night (Thursday), we played cards in LB. The first game was over at 1 or so. I didn't win. The second game ended up to be fruitless for everyone involved. I didn't end up getting home until 4, thanks to scotch, a spliff, and a closed Southbound 405 freeway... Those three things didn't all happen at the same time.
Tonight was a bartender's last night at work. I hate to see him go. He's moving to Texas with his family & gonna head to another Z. I didn't get out til 115 tonight. Beverage in tow, I get home, then laundry. Now I want to go to sleep, and there's two parties happening, I think. One to my right and one to my left. I've got *talktalktalk* in the left ear, and *bumpbumpbump* in the right (from the bass, you see). I just want to fucking go to sleep. I'm putting Oysterhead on soon. Hopefully that'll do the trick.
Oh, I got a haircut today, btw.

Those in Southern California know how bad it is right now, but for those out of the area, Brush fires are raging from Malibu to Santa Clarita, south to Arrowhead, and east to San Diego. The worst fires in CA history. The air quality is hazardous. 513,000 people have been asked to evacuate their homes. Qualcomm Stadium is full of evacuees. Everyone here is affected by this in some way. Schools are being closed due to smoke and ash. My friend Adam (of the Tyrants) has 3 houses of people coming to live with him. My new girl, Dawn, might be evacuated from her place in San Clemente. I've got CNN on now, and I'm seeing a WALL of flame literally 20 yards from a home in Running Springs, CA, and a helicopter attempting to douse them. It's intense, it's awful. All I want to do is watch the news, but I have to get to work and work my day job, which seems extremely pointless with so many people in need right now.

How's your own personal lexicon?
FreeRice.com donates 10 grains of rice to a hungry person (through international aid) for every word you guess right. Not sure what I mean? Just click the link and try. It's for a good cause.
I think I'm done playing for the night, but I've guessed enough words right to donate 2400 grains of rice, and I've attained a vocab level of 38. I also know that chromaticity means hue. Have fun, kids.

I last blogged on the 2nd. It's now the 15th. I've been busy, it seems. 3 days after my last blog (Friday, 10/5), I was promoted again in Aikido. I went from one stripe on my blue belt to two. That made me the same rank as Ryan(!) for all of 3 days, until he tested and received his 3rd stripe. Ryan's also 8 months ahead of me in practice. Of course, he's miles ahead of me as an Aikidoka, but at least I'm closing ground. Work's been good. We got a new general manager. He's working so much, tho, that my hours are getting cut back ever so slightly, so it looks like I'll be picking up a shift or two during the week. Chances are, if you pick a random day to come in, there'll be a 6 in 7 chance you'll catch me. That's 85.7%. Also, I find a lot of my free time being spent with a wonderful new young lady. I'm not going to go into great detail (yet), but if you ask my close personal friend, the Magic 8 Ball, if things look good, he'd say "It is decidedly so."

That seems to be a good excuse lately. Tonight was supposed to be the final send off for my boss. I was delegated to round up everyone and get back to my boss with a head count, of sorts. Instead, I ate Wahoo's, drank some beer and passed out on the couch for 2-3 hours. I watched a bunch of Comedy Central, and Dexter on DVD (thanks, Chris). Tomorrow, a small load of laundry awaits me before work. Maybe some food shopping. Exciting.

At 1a, I got off my 10 hour shift, fucking tired. Got a case of Vitamin Water from a thankful guest. Carried that shit across the mall & up 3 flights of stairs to get to the car. Met some coworkers at a bar & stayed til last call. Now I'm home. I should be asleep, but I'm wide awake. I've got Beirut on, but I just did a good 15 minutes with my bokken. Can you believe that shit? Now I KNOW I need to sleep, because, as it stands, I've got 5 hours of sleep in front of me. All before a perceivably long day tomorrow. We'll see if I can get to work on time...

I finished World War Z today. I'm only slightly ashamed to admit that I now live in fear of a zombie plague infecting Earth. I wish I was joking. Eric's fueling the fire over IM as we speak. Last night, driving to Anaheim/Yorba Linda for my lessons, I kept looking around and thinking "ok, if it happened right now, what could I do to get safe, ASAP? In your car, you're fucked, because they either get you while you're buckled in, or you starve to death because you can't get out, because zombies are right fucking there, trying to eat your ass. I need to get a sword. A real one. None of this fake stamped crap I already own. I need something that can cleave zombie brains in half (that's the only way to kill 'em, you know). The little bit of sword skill I've learned in Aikido has made me confident in my ability. I found battle-ready katanas online. I like this one. Also, I need to learn how to grow a sustainable garden. I'm gonna have to eat, you know. And, I need a house on stilts. And a gun. With unlimited ammo and night vision.
*'Zack' is, in the book, the military code name for zombies.

I gotta learn that when I hang with certain work people, their issues with certain other people eventually come out in conversation. I should've left when I said I was gonna. I sent a heat-of-the-moment text, too (sober, mind you). Now I'm
upset no, flustered no, agitated. There we go. 2a in the middle of two days off isn't the time to be bombarded with everyone's work shit. This is why I'm an asshole on the clock.

Q: Where did the last five days come from?
Ok, I haven't blogged since Friday. Sorry, loyal fans. A lot's happened since then. We'll see how much I get to.
I went back to work at 5 that afternoon, in a good mood, happy for my sushi & Hellboy. I think I played some guitar hero 2, too. As soon as I stepped across the threshold of my restaurant, I was ready to snap necks. I was so upset over what had transpired earlier that day (apparently), that I was such a fucking asshole for the first hour or so. Everyone pointed out to me that I was "grumpy" or that I "looked annoyed." Well, I was. Everything was setting me off, and there wasn't much I could do about it. I told some of my friends & top servers to watch out. I even had to apologize once or twice to some coworkers. At the end of the night, a long-time friend came by the Z to say hi. We ended up hitting it off. She hipped me to a bunch of new music, including this... gypsy folk band, Beirut. There's so much Eastern European stuff in their music, it's enchanting. I can't stop listening to 'em. I ended up having that day off (much to the chagrin of my coworkers. I heard the place fell apart with one less manager), so I listened to music all day, ate In & Out & watched Oldboy. An intense Korean action movie. I missed some shit during the first viewing, so I've been itching to watch it again.
Jonny came by that afternoon. We went to the Outback, ate & drank beer, then we went to see Mike play in LB. Sunday, I met Jessica & Olivia (friends from work) for lunch. Olivia brought her 3 year old son. Jessica, her white sunglasses. We went to BJs & split a pizza. I took those linked-to pictures on that outing. Had to work that night. Monday, I went to Aikido for the first time in more than a month. Between a back injury, my scrotal malady, & my work schedule, I haven't had time for any Aikido. It was great to start back up again. The guys, for my birthday, got me a bokken. They think I have some ability with the sword. I've been meaning to pick one up, and was so surprised with it yesterday. I didn't have my glasses on, so I had no idea it was coming. I had (good) pho for the first time in a month, too. It was a good day. Work that night was cool. Nothing exciting happened. Thankfully. It wasn't a clusterfuck like last week. Now, it's 210, I have to get up in less than 5 hours for work & I'm damn tired. I think my bourbon is kicking in, too.
Due to a multiple-brain brain lapse, I went to work when I didn't need to. I was even called in early. After 30 minutes on the clock, I was told to go home. Home, I went. The upside? I get 5 hours of rest before I have to go back at 5. As for now? A sweet sushi lunch and my most favorite guilty pleasure, a new Hellboy.

I haven't been a huge proponent of Marvel Comics movies in the last few years (Daredevil, Punisher, Ghost Rider), but I just watched the trailer for Iron Man. So incredible, so intense, it ate up an hour of my laptop battery in 4 minutes. Do yourself a favor.

Today I had to be at work at 745 to do liquor inventory, since I didn't work the night shift last night to do it. I figured I'd be in for like 90 minutes to knock it out, then home to bed before my 3pm shift. I didn't realize I was going to learn to take the liquor order today. I would've eaten breakfast if I had known. I was done at 11. After buying a bagel & trying to go to sleep, I finally managed to around 1215. Back up at 130. Into work at 245 for the 3p monday meeting. We're supposed to be on the watch for our regional manager to come in. My boss' boss. Mondays have been slow lately, with school back in session & everything. So I was just a little nervous since it was the first time my shift has ever been watched over by a higher-up. Well, today we were slammed. SLAMMED. There was a solid two hours that I was cluster-fucked, stuck in the window with a sea of tickets and no floor support. I got through it. Everyone said I did well. I don't know if I agree. The regional showed up right in the middle of it. Right in the crunchiest of crunch times. It was nerve-wracking. He was nice to me. Friendly. Not so much to my boss on the phone afterwards. I'm sure I'll get the lowdown tomorrow. After my nerves settled, I was able to get right down to my paperwork when we closed. Usually I'm done & out by midnight. Tonight I was done by 1115p. Except the cooks were dragged ass tonight. Since I have to wait for them to finish before I can go, I was there til 1215a. Now I'm home. Beer in hand. Getting close to doing my best Towlie impression. The title of this post is how many hours I worked today. Twelve and a half. At least my OT rate is solid. And I'll get a lot of it, with my 9 days in a row, starting wednesday. I've got tomorrow off, then solid work until thursday night. Then two days off.
And with those two days off, I'm thinking of going out of town. Someplace I can drive to in less than 4 hours. Someplace that will cost not-a-lot. Someplace where not doing anything is perfectly acceptable. That rules out Vegas. I'm thinking San Diego or Santa Barbara, but there's got to be something else out there. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear 'em.
By Jeff @ 12:53 AM
It's on about 5a. Just got in from hanging with work people. I'll probably crash the fuck out here in a sec, but I'm not that tired. My brain needs to sleep. My body, however, is ready to play some guitar hero. I won't indulge, because 8 hours of sleep now puts me up at 1p, with work to follow at 330.

You've all seen my little snippet blogs of what I'm reading. I've not really reviewed because when I have the chance, I'm lazy and don't. I'm gonna make this quick. Yiddish Policemen's Union was quite good, though there's one part in the book that rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not sure I want to get into it. It's an issue with deus ex machina. Harry Potter 7 was great, too. Barb & I have been talking about it tonight. We agree it's a good finale. At one point, I thought the story moved VERY slow, then it took off and was enthralling until the end. I've been wanting to reread the last 1/4 or so, in hopes that it'd sink in a little better.
On the docket now is God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, by Vonnegut. I love it so far. I just wish I had the time to read it with the fervor I read Harry Potter. I'm also hoping to finish Hagakure before my next Amazon shipment comes.
Once that comes, I've got The Coming of Conan, recommended to me by a guy named St. Bastard, who I met at Comic Con. It's the original writing of Robert E. Howard, who was a pretty prolific fantasy writer in his day. He created the Conan character, as well as a ton of other characters. It's his Conan I'm most interested in, tho. Dark Horse's Conan series is one of my top pics whenever I buy comics, and they're amazing stories, based on Howard's original works.
World War Z, an Oral History of the Zombie War, from what I hear, is about the world's fight against the zombie uprising, told in first person accounts. I'll get more in depth after I read it, but it seems incredibly fucking interesting. Written by the same guy who did the Zombie Survival Guide, but this one's no parody.
And to round it all out, The Unfettered Mind: Writings of the Zen Master to the Sword Master. I need more Zen in my life. Plus, I've been a poor Aikidoka lately. It'd be nice to get some fresh perspective on things.
By Jeff @ 2:01 AM
I always have good bloggings in mind, until I sit in front of the comp to write it all out. Then zip! Gone. We'll see if I can make some sense.
First thing's first. Those concerned about my medical malady, don't worry. I'm getting better all the time. For those that don't know, it's time to reveal: Last Saturday, I discovered a mystery pain in my right testicle. No joke. I got it checked out, diagnosed, and I'm in the healing process. Without going into too much detail, it's ending up not being as big a deal as it sounds (I went a solid week completely freaking out, btw). Bottom line: I'm healthy, I've got two balls, and I'm clean (not that I get that dirty these days). It just sucks to walk for any extended period of time right now.
I made a new friend this week. We talked of lucid dreaming & pancakes, and she explained how to train your brain into making it happen (lucid dreaming, not pancakes). I've been trying to do what she's told me during my conscious time, but I lose track of it when I work. Did 9 hours at work tonight & completely forgot about lucid dreaming. I don't think you'll ever read this, but if you are reading right now, I'm trying, I swear.
Chris & I went to a used book store in Anaheim that's closing down. We bought some shit. I got a few Chess books, an anthology of Thoreau's works, a little paperback of Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian (vol. 1), & a Harvard Dictionary of Music (I've never owned a music dictionary before).
I served for the first time in months Friday night. Had a kick ass night. I'm a really fucking good server. Went & saw Phil Shane after work, and seeing him is always a good time. It had only been a week since the last time. I think I'm a Phil Shane addict now. Might be time to join the fan club. Might be time to drive out to State Line & see him at Whiskey Pete's.
Yesterday (Saturday), I had the day off. Did some shopping, for food & not-food. I'm trying my damnedest to buy food to make at home, instead of the late night/early morning drive-thru runs (tho In & Out is ok). I was convinced to hit the frozen foods aisle @ Trader Joe's. Also, I've been buying soy milk instead of regular milk. I'm not sure why, but milk skeeves me out lately. However, chocolate milk still sounds delectable to me. If I weren't drinking beer, I'd have some right now. I might just have to finish my beer...
Went to Best Buy & bought Murs' newest album, Murray's Revenge, and the Dr. Strange animated movie and watched it under the influence. I need to watch it again. It made no sense to me, and I lurve Doc Strange. The Murs album is fucking amazing, by the way. For more Dr. Strange goodness, read Dr. Strange: The Oath by my favorite guy, Brian K. Vaughan & Marcos Martin.
Today, I spent my pre-work time reading. I'm nearly done with Yiddish Policemen's Union (it's getting done before sleep tonight). I also poured over some comics. Green Lantern comics. The current arc is incredible. All my years loving Green Lantern comics have not been in vain. Head to your LCS Today! & read it, or trade-wait, whenever that happens. It's the Sinestro Corps arc. C'mon, let your inner nerd out once in a while.

I wrote this last night:
I've been feeling pretty lame since Sunday. Yesterday. Maybe I'm just coming down off my weekend. The 3-Day birthday was awesome, had the self esteem up pretty high. Drank, saw Phil Shane, saw Superbad (which is fucking awesome). Bought & watched Bubba Ho-Tep. Bought & played Guitar Hero 2. Bought a new phone, too. Drank some more. Then back to the grind last night. Liquor inventory. Trying to keep my shift under 9 hours so I can make it out for a couple Guinness before bed. Manager meeting today @ 3, then out after just after midnight. I lost my coherence on the shift. Got "fuzzy." It's when I lock it into auto-pilot because I can't think or see clearly. I let my hands go where they need to go, I talk to who I need to talk to, I get my job done, but it's just going through the motions. EVERY shift was like that before I quit the first time, 3 years ago. I wasn't the boss then. I am now. I hope it's not happening again. Of course distraction seems to be the noun on my mind these days. I'm working on getting focused. I'm trying to get all my lil' ducks in a lil' row...

There's a comic shop walking distance from my place now. It's lame. The one I go to in Tustin rules. This one's closer, tho. They didn't have the comics I was looking for from last week. And he tried to sell me on bags and boards. I told him 'no thanks.' He then proceeds to tell me what they do. Junior, please. I've been collecting comics since you were in diapers. I know what bags and boards do, and I don't want them today. Motherfucker.

I'm home from the Harp, somewhat intoxicated (but I walked, so there), and I'm feelin' pretty awesome for my first couple hours of being 27. Tomorrow should be fun. I'm off work. Also off Friday & Saturday. Can't beat that. Now my only concern before going to bed is what time the neighbors' cats or dogs will wake me up with their yelping. The dog today yelped from 8a (which is when I woke up. It might've started earlier.) to 140, when I left for work. It's not so bad with the window closed, but I like to sleep with the shit open & the ceiling fan on low. We'll see. I'll blog. It'll be good.
Tomorrow = Dinner w/ the parents (I think) & Phil Shane @ night. Should be a blasty blast. Anyone that wants to join (post-dinner) need only to call yours truly.
By Jeff @ 1:51 AM
This Thursday, it's my birthday. I'll be 27. Here's the plan:
7pm, the Azteca in Garden Grove. Their Crooner's Lounge is an "Elvis-themed" bar. It's Elvis night. On the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death. Starring Phil Shane, the hardest working man in show business. If you can come out, come. If you can't, no worry. Chances are you can catch me at the Harp Inn any night between tonight (after midnight) & Friday. Call me if you wanna come.
By Jeff @ 11:25 AM
Tonight's been n interesting night. I encountered some lame MySpace drama & left my place to get drunk. Here's my story:
I walked to my new favorite bar, The Harp Inn in Costa Mesa, and there's a drunk Irishman at the bar. I ordered a shot of bushmills, he recommended tullamore dew, which I was more than happy to try. it was great, by the way. We talked of his new dog and his previously dead dog. His divorce and his new girlfriend. He wanted to know if he should go to her place, drunk off his motherfucking ass at 2a when the bar closed. The bartender & I said "no." I gave some pretty strong arguments why he shouldn't go & the bartender agreed (I can be pretty smart sometimes). He listened to reason (barely) & took a cab to his place (as far as I know).
On my walk home, I was stopped by Costa Mesa PD. My first time stopped while walking home. Thought they were gonna hit me for public intox or something (cause I was in no condition to drive), when the officer first on the scene started interrogating me. I asked him what this was about & whatever help he needed from me, I was happy to comply. Apparently, there was a guy who caused some shit at a bar near to where I was & I matched his description. Well, 15 minutes, a pat down, a barrage of questions, 5 cop cars & a helicopter, and an assload of bright lights later, and I was cleared to go. They took my address, my phone #, my pertinent info, etc. One of them even asked me about my shoes, which I was more than happy to tell him about. He thought they were Vans. They're Pumas. I even told him where to buy 'em. Not bad for 3 Guinness & a shot of whisky in the 45 minutes before close.

Bought a sweet CD today. Eleven Continents by RF & Lili De La Mora (myspace). They're awesome. I've listened to it twice today. And now Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens (myspace) is on. I'm in heaven right now. so relaxed....
In sad news, I forgot to buy Green Lantern Corps #14 & X=Factor #22 today. =(

Just now, a neighbor's cat (the one who was whining two mornings ago @ 6a) infiltrated our house and tried to get comfortable. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a cat in the house. Mostly to give me an excuse to take pictures & turn them into cat macros. Plus, it'd give me the chance to say "now we have some pussy in the house." Which, if you know me, would make my day every time I said it. But between the cost of care & feeding, and the fact that I wear dark wool slacks for work, it'd be stupid to go back to the world of sticky rollers & vacuuming the couch all the time. And the litter box... no thanks.

My blogging has been slow, lately. Promises of Comic Con stories & living the single life in Costa Mesa have gone unfulfilled. I promise I'll get off my ass. Not right now, tho. I've been lazy all day and I've got a big night of playing poker until either this cell phone rings, or I head off to Mike's gig @ Taco Beach in LB tonight.
Also, I joined the Suicide Girls Online Community today.

Ok. It's 215 & I'm fresh off a walk from the Goat Hill Tavern back to my place. Full off a pitcher of Murphy's Irish Stout, Fiona Apple is on, and there's just one thing on my mind. I want a new fedora. And I want it by the 16th. My Birthday. I've got grand designs that night. Designs that only a fucking hip new fedora will complete. I've been looking on all the hat sites today, on Amazon, on eBay, and I'm not seeing much. There have been a few hip ones, but it seems the more hip it is, the more expensive it is.
What I'm looking for is a brownish fedora, maybe straw, maybe porkpie style, shallow or stingy brim (2 1/4" or less). Less than $100. Preferably less than $50. Here's my dream hat. It's only $195.
If anyone happens to see a fedora matching this description that looks cool, drop me a line or a link & I'll take a look.

Tonight is the first night since I've moved in that I have no plans. I'm usually at work or trying to be social when I have the night off. I worked a long shift today & tonight no one's called, and that's fine by me. I just made my first real meal here (not counting ramen & PB&J), I got the "OK" from Mike to smoke my pipe in the apartment & there's the matter of that 2/3 bottle of cabernet sauvignon I
yoinked received from work last night. So I'm full of food, lying on my couch, blogging, smoking, drinking a smooth fucking cab, and listening to some Mingus.
I'm still uploading my Con pics. I'm still formulating some blogs, too. I've got a fair amount of stories coming. But here's the nutshell version of my weekend.
Buca di Beppo w/ Caballeros
Marvel Comics Party w/ Caballeros
The evil eye from Warren Ellis
Lime w/ Caballeros (year 3)
Marvel Comics Party w/ Caballeros, again
Late-Nite Rick shaw ride
Pics will come SOON!

Saw, for the second time, Phil Shane tonight. Just like last time, it was a good show, with interesting stories to follow. I won't share the specifics, but Eric, Jonny, & Jon's friend Jason are crashing here tonight. He's great. Phil Shane is. If you ever get a chance to witness the "one man legend," do yourself a favor. Just take it easy on the drinks. I just realized I left my card there, btw. 4 woodford reserve manhattans will do that to you. Especially after 4 MGDs at the house. So that's my deal. I gotta go. More to come.
By Jeff @ 2:56 AM
I finally tracked down what the deal with my bike is. For those that don't know, I ordered a bike on July 3rd, a beach cruiser, actually. Actually, it's this bike. The guy who builds the bikes for EvilEds.com was out of the country when I ordered. Apparently, he's back and yes, he has one (and only one) of my bikes in stock. I spoke to Evil Ed directly this morning. Evil Ed said he'll ship it out today & I'll get it Monday, which'll give me exactly zero free time to ride it until after Comic Con.

It's official! Today's my first day out, just finished moving (nearly) everything, including the king sized bed I've had in storage. I've got a roommate, Mike from the Smiling Tyrants, and we both have too much shit. We're in Costa Mesa, near the end of the 55. If anyone wants my address, I'm happy to give it out. You just have to use it by coming over & hanging out. Plenty of street parking, btw. Pics to come.
Also, I've glommed onto a neighbor's wifi. If you're reading this, I'm sorry. I'm a net junkie. I'm calling on cable interwebs on Monday. I promise.

I'm not sure what I did in Aikido today, but my back is fucking killing me. I think I went a little crazy with my diving forward rolls today. I didn't know you could throw out your upper back, but I sure as hell did it. It hurts to do anything. It's comfortable to just slouch, but it hurts to go upright from it. It's great to lie down, but I want to sit up and read. I'm not tired, either. I was gonna take some more ibuprofen, but I've been drinking... that's never stopped me before, tho. On the upside, I advanced in rank today. I'm now Blue Belt with One Stripe.
Also, I lost the O-ring on the back of my left-side piercing. I hope it stays in while I'm sleeping.
By Jeff @ 1:54 AM
I drank. All day. Did a little shopping, too. That's what prompted the all-day drinking. Bought some slacks, tho. Went home. Drank more, & hit the taqueria w/ Eric & Chris. Had some cabeza tacos. Yes, cabeza. Then we had some cigars & drank more. I'm tired.

within the last few weeks, I've been told I look like two international celebrities. By "international," I mean celebrities in countries other than the US. We had guests tonight who said I looked like Rolf Harris. He's an Australian-born actor/entertainer. I guess I look like he did in his younger days, with the glasses & beard and all. I dunno how much of a complement it is to be compared to this guy, but it's all good. I've tried to find a young picture of the guy (he's 77, after all), and this is all I could find:
I've been guilty of making that face, btw. And in case you've never seen him (I hadn't until I found this video), here you go.
And the other "celebrity" is a character from the Univision telenovela, "La Fea Más Bella," named "Tomás." This is the show that was made into "Ugly Betty" for US audiences. The cooks have been calling me "Tommy," because of my "likeness" to "Tomy" from the show. I swear. You wear glasses & you look like every other person glasses.
By Jeff @ 10:43 AM
Jonny & I just caught Transformers w/ a bunch of his friends. It's fucking awesome. Anyone who wants to see it, I'll gladly go a second time. This movie didn't fuck around. Action. Comedy. Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus Prime. It had everything a 6 year old like me could ever hope for.
By Jeff @ 1:13 AM
I had a sweet day today. I met someone awesome for lunch & we did a little shopping @ the Spectrum. I'll try to get some pics up when I have a chance to wear some of the clothes I bought. My shift was pretty good behind the bar. It was my last one (for a while). I'm gonna be managing Sunday nights from now on, because I'm the bar-inventory guy. My MySpace blew up (for once), so that was nice. I read a chapter in Yiddish Policeman's Union, and now I'm listening to what I've been craving for a couple weeks now; a little Buena Vista Social Club.

In an effort to keep myself from falling asleep on my fresh piercings, here's what I'm reading ot keep my head upright. I've barely scratched the surface of these entries, so I won't give a description of either just yet. Just know what I'm wasting my time on when I'm not trying to catch a movie or Voyager on TV.

It's looking less and less likely that I'm going to be able to make a trip to New York happen in August. Between getting an apartment and what my August work schedule is turning into, I can't afford to take anymore time off after my 5 days of Comic Con. I hate to break your hearts, babies. Let's think about 2008.
By Jeff @ 7:50 PM
I've been talking about getting my ears pierced for a while. I've been wanting to do it, but I've always been too chicken, or the timing hasn't been right. A month or so ago, I was hanging with a girl I've been hanging with lately, and she said she wanted to get her nose pierced. I said if she got her nose done that day, I'd get my ears pierced with her. My deal was that I felt I needed a little peer pressure to motivate me to get it done. We played this game of I'd ask her to go and she couldn't, she'd ask me to go & I couldn't, ad infinitum. Our schedules never lined up. I had time the week of Ryan's wedding, but I didn't want to in case there was a problem healing & they looked bad in the wedding pics.
This cat I work with got his ears pierced & they looked good, so I wanted to go to his place. He went to Tommy T's in Huntington Beach. I told myself this week that I'd go there on Wednesday, since I had the afternoon off from lessons and no real plans after work. I got to Tommy T's and it all was kind of a whirlwind. The sales guy was pretty cut & dry. "Hey man, how's it going? What can we do for you today?" I told him I wanted to get my ears pierced, and he asked if I wanted plugs. Well, I did. I'm not looking to stretch them out too much, but if for some reason I have the chance, I will. The plugs he directed me toward were plain black. I asked him at what size I'd start at, and he said "looks like 8 gauge." I've read online that gauged piercings start at 12, maybe 10. I was surprised to hear I'd be starting with an 8 gauge. That's where I wanted to get to, so it sounded good to just start there. He grabbed the plugs from the case, I checked them out & I said "lets go." $103.50 later, and my plugs were in a little autoclave bag, ready for sterilization.
I was amped when I first got there. Now I had to wait the 20 minutes for the autoclave & for the piercer to get the room ready. That's when my nerves started to set in. I tried to read, but the music was too loud. A girl getting pierced after me struck up a conversation, which helped a little with my nerves. The piercer, Lucy, called me in. Nice girl. Head full of metal. Her look was intimidating. Going through the motions of cleaning my earlobes, she tried to help me relax. Made me spit my gum out. I asked her how much it would hurt, and she said it depends. I asked her if I have to worry about bleeding, and she said that there may be some, but I shouldn't worry that much about it. That's when I turned & saw the 8ga needle (second from the left). I thought there's no fucking way that's going in my ear. She said I'd be fine. She marked target marks and clamped my right ear down.
I can only assume she was gentle, but that goddamn needle hurt like a bitch. I had heard from the guy I work with that it would feel like a pinch, then nothing. He must've had the 16ga needle. I told Lucy just how much it hurt, but that afterward, it wasn't that bad. She got the plug in & moved the clamp to the left ear. Now that I've done one ear, the other shouldn't be any issue, right? I relaxed, she pierced me, and the shit hurt 5x worse than the other ear. Once she got the jewelry in, she saw my right ear was bleeding and cleaned it up. It stopped right away. She explained the aftercare process to me, and I was on my way. I checked it out in the mirror, left a tip, and went on my way a happy boy.
I'm at the end of day 2, and I've got another 4 weeks before I'm all healed up. I've shown off to Chris & Eric, and I got the thumbs up from those guys. I think my brother digs it, and my dad probably thinks I'm stupid. My mom hasn't seen it yet. My boss hasn't seen it yet, either. Tomorrow will be the first day I'll wear it to work. We'll see how it goes over at the Z. It shouldn't be a problem. I won't be the only guy with pierced ears.
So, loyal fans, what's the verdict?

The boiler basically burst at work last night, so I was stuck at work until 2a dealing with it. I got home around 230. At 3, I got a crazy text message from a friend who seemed to be in trouble. There was no trouble, but I ended up staying awake past dawn. Then I had work at 11. I was training someone today. Now I'm home, with no lessons tonight and no plans (yet). I've got comics. I've got beer. And I've got a bed. I intend to take advantage of them all this afternoon.
But before I go, there were a couple of things I wanted to hip you all to.
Tanqueray Rangpur Gin
I haven't been much of a gin drinker since I've started really drinking 6-7 years ago, but I bought a bottle of this stuff & brought it to Ryan's rehearsal dinner last Thursday. It's fantastic. It's Rangpur lime-infused gin. Now, I don't know what a Rangpur lime is, but I sure do like this gin. Gin, for me, needs more of a citrus kick. Like a lemon slice, instead of a twist, in a gin martini. This gin has that w/o the addition of extra fruit. I think I knocked down two strong gin and tonics that night, and if I wake up later, I might head out to buy another bottle for myself.
ALL CAPS - Madvillian
This video is why I like the man known as MF Doom.
New Avengers #31
Now, it's not the cover that's the big deal. It's the pages that follow. We nerds joke about comic book revelations/happenings that "crack the internet in half." This issue of Marvel Comics' New Avengers has all the nerds in heated debate, leaving most hardcore nerds with the feeling that the interweb has been split in two. I wasn't too into this title, but I've been buying it since the first issue. The story arcs have been from silly to serious, good to just plain terrible. This current arc has kept my attention, but this issue in particular left a crazy reveal that makes me want to go back and read this one from issue #1. That, to me is the sign of a great comic. When something happens to make you want to reread the whole thing, it's great. It's why I read the comics I do.
By Jeff @ 5:36 PM
That's what I feel like right now. Kinda good/kinda not. It's 1a and I'm home, drinking beer, after a long (but awesome) weekend, a rough workout this morning, and just getting home from work half an hour ago.
There are good things shaping up right now. It looks like I might be (finally!) getting a place. More on that as I find things out. Something happened today at work that I'm very excited about. It's like watching a sinking ship that's caused nothing but misery drift to it's watery grave. Only, this sinking ship is trying to take me down with it. My foot is caught in the mooring line, and it's out of my hands to do anything about it. Either way, I'll blog about as much as I can when the situation is resolved completely.
As for the 'kinda not,' I've got the blues right about now. Big time. Came on Sunday afternoon, and it's still going strong. The work issues, the getting hit in the face this morning. The emotional riptide that's been pulling me in over the last few days. I need a break. A change of scenery. Or at least a good night's sleep. No work in the morning. Maybe I can get that tonight.
By Jeff @ 1:10 AM
It's been a long day. Not much sleep last night. Woke up early (for not getting much sleep) this morning. Work. Lessons. Then home to eat, followed by going out for a coworkers bday. Drank a little bit. Managed to get two free packs of cigarettes from a Camel rep. Not sure what I'm gonna to with 'em, but I've got 'em. I'm off tomorrow, until 430, which is the rehearsal for Ryan & Jessica's wedding, with the rehearsal dinner to follow. Exciting.

Remembering our favorite family:
By Jeff @ 10:31 PM
I just finished the series finale of The Sopranos. Without spoiling, I can say that at first watch, I wasn't into the last scene. Now that I've had 10 or so minutes to mill it over, read other peoples' perspectives, and reanalyze, I'm enjoying it more. I'm sorry to see it go, but it was time. The Sopranos ended with grace. That's all I hoped for.
By Jeff @ 1:55 AM
We had some shitty guests in last night. They were so disappointed in their experience, that they emailed about their bad experience right away. In that email, I was personally attacked and insulted. I've felt a little like shit because of it. Not because I didn't do a good job, but because the couple in question were so petty in their words. I have no recourse, since I want to keep my job. And in the reply email, my boss did very little to defend me. Well, maybe it's petty of me, but I want revenge. I have their email address. I'm signing them up for all the spam I can find. And I'll spend the better part of the week doing it. Maybe it'll be obvious that it's in retaliation to their rudeness. I don't care. At least I feel somewhat vindicated.
By Jeff @ 1:41 PM
I feel lame for being home, but at least I can pin it on this little throat infection I've got. I went to see my favorite doc today. One of my trombone students is a semi-retired ear/nose/throat doc, and he's nice enough to see me whenever I'm having an issue with any of those areas. He said I'm on the mend, and if this were ancient (pre-medicine) times, I'd have no issue healing on my own. I have the energy to go out, drink, and socialize, but the last thing I want to do is fuck up my meds. My 1000mg of antibiotics I have to take 2x daily. Or to be out in the cold, and fuck up my throat for another week. Ryan's wedding is next Saturday, and I gotta be in good shape for that. At least I have SNES & ice cream tonight.
By Jeff @ 10:01 PM
Jon dug out the SNES when he moved back in. He said he was gonna throw it away. I said "Noooooo!!1!1" He then gave it to me. I finally hooked it up today. It's awesome, but I thought I had more games. Where's my goddamn Chrono Trigger & Super Metroid?! Time to hit up eBay. I could use a new controller or two, too. I found a great place to put it, tho.
(Jonny hates that I did this)
By Jeff @ 12:45 AM
I've got a sore throat. It's been building for the last week or so, and it kinda hit me hard tonight. As bored as I am, I'm staying in tonight to recoup. I've got super Naked Juice, a gallon of Cran-Grape, a candy bar, and a whole bag of the new Doritos X-13D chips. And if all that fails, I bought a case of beer too. The chips are fucking good, btw.
And on the list of things to do:

"That door" being the front door to my restaurant. I asked myself that question when I exited the freeway, right before I got home. I didn't know the answer, so I turned around to drive the 15 minutes back to work to check. Turns out I did lock that door. This all happened between 1230a & 1a.
By Jeff @ 1:44 AM
I've been in a cloud for the last day or so. Last night's post has preoccupied me for the better part of today. The troublesome posts were deleted. Forever. Never to return. I couldn't think of the best way to make amends without deleting them, so I just deleted them all. I read all my posts from around that time, and I just sounded like a dumb kid. I'd like to think I've done some growing up since then, and part of growing up is knowing when you're wrong. Right?
By Jeff @ 1:23 AM
Last night around 230, I had a bombshell dropped on me regarding something I hadn't thought about in nearly 3 years. In the past, I made some comments in the heat of the moment, slept the bad thoughts off, and kept being a happy guy when I woke up. Now, things I said are coming back to haunt me because I made a joke that was later taken out of context. I've said before that personal blogging is a cathartic endeavor for me. Now, I'm reaping the rewards of said catharsis. I really don't care to get into specifics, since too many people have already made my life and my past their business. I wish the circumstances that drew the new attention could have been different. I also wish I didn't feel so violated as to how I was discovered. Yeah, that's where the cyber-stalking comes in. But I guess that's the curse of the internet; there's no place to hide. Especially if you use your real name in your URL.
I've been a peaceful guy these last few years. Most people I know think of me as mellow. I would say I try to be calm, but that's a lie. I don't try anything. I'm just an even-tempered man. I said in a blog last month that I'm a firm believer in karma. I'm trying to figure out where I'm at now, because of this business. I had a pretty good day today (which may get it's own post), so maybe the universe is already balancing itself out. The last thing I needed was one more thing to lose sleep over, but it came my way just the same. Maybe it's a good thing my insomnia kicked in last night & tonight. Gives me time to repent and to figure out the appropriate way to make things right.
All I want is peace.

I've been reading a lot lately. I finished "Sirens of Titan" on the plane back from AZ. Finished it on the runaway at John Wayne Airport, actually, waiting to deplane. I've just started "The Wild Trees," a narrative non-fiction novel by Richard Preston, about exploring the giant redwoods. It's pretty amazing so far. Preston was on The Daily Show a couple months back, promoting Wild Trees. It's about the first guys that climbed to the top of the 30-plus stories tall California Redwoods in 1987 (I think). I'm about 5 chapters in at this point, and it's been a great read so far.
On deck is the new Michael Chabon novel, "The Yiddish Policeman's Union," then "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater," yet another Vonnegut. Also, Fight Club (finally).

Inspired by Bernard Pivot and made famous by James Lipton, someone posted this someplace else, and I stole it and claimed it for my own.

There's not much more exciting for me than to see my little brother, who's spent the better part of the new millenium in college, graduate. Yesterday was awesome. I'm so proud of Jonny for sticking it out all this time and getting his damn degree.
It was 110 degrees during the ceremony. Thankfully it was inside. I got a lot of shit for wearing a longsleeved shirt (w/ french cuffs) and a necktie, but I looked damn good. We went out for an amazing dinner last night, too, at steakhouse called "Remington's," attached to some hotel. It was fantastic.
Last night was another night of heavy drinking. I tried to take it easy. Not hard to do when your $.50 Coronas are warm. I still had 8. Well, 7.5. And a Jell-O shot. It wasn't that delicious, but I normally like Jell-O shots, so it was bearable. We both ended up in our proper beds, full of "California burritos." That's steak, guac, and french fries. Yes, fries. It was perfect drunk food.
It's nearly go time for me. We're trying to figure out the plan for today. Maybe some lunch. Jon & I are itching to get to the Indian casino and play some cards. My flight's at 730. Expect lots of pictures when I get back. I'm up past 170, I think.
By Jeff @ 12:02 PM
I get wrong numbers from the above number all the time. I'm sitting on Jonny's couch, enjoying my post-dinner food coma, when I get a call.
"Hello, is Elizabeth there?"
Me: No, young man. You have the wrong number.
"Well, how come you always answer the phone when I call for Elizabeth."
Me: Because it's my phone.
"No it isn't. Whatever." *click*
If anyone ever gets the infantile urge to make any prank/crank phone calls, feel free to hit the above number as often as possible.

Today's the day. And we drank a lot last night. We're gonna drink a lot tonight, too. I (re-)met all of Jonny's friends last night. Big ups to RJ & Mike, who're awesome. Learned Jonny's AZ nickname, too, which I was surprised I didn't already know. I won't share it here. Jon's friend John is here, and our Uncle H is on a plane in from LA. It's gonna be an awesome day today.
Also, I took 56 pics yesterday. Should be some good ones today, too.
By Jeff @ 10:37 AM
In 6 or so hours, I leave damn hot Anaheim, California for motherfucking hot Tempe, Arizona. Jonny's graduating from college on Thursday, and moves back in on Sunday, so we're gonna head out & celebrate. Also, I'm gonna drink. A lot. I'll be back Friday to get a little sleep, then to a huge morning at the Z on Saturday. Have fun without me. Also, I'm on US Airways flight 656 when I fly home solo Friday night.

It sucked. If you're looking for a way to pay $10 to waste 2 hours of your life, look no further. It stars Eric Bana & Drew Berrymore. Also, it's about poker. Remember how Rounders was a good movie about poker? This movie was made for the girlfriends/wives of guys who like to watch/play poker, so they could get them to take them out to spend money on a movie. It's like they took two movies and mashed them together, leaving all the unnecessary bits in the middle. B-O-R-I-N-G.
By Jeff @ 11:56 AM
It looks like I'm continuing to make my way up the ladder at Z's. I was told by my boss tonight that he wants to take me off serving shifts indefinitely, so I can bartend and manage as much as possible. And it looks like I might become the bar manager once my official training is done. This is gonna mean lots of work, and lots of work means lots of money. Sweet.

I'm back from Ryan's bachelor party weekend. It was awesome. Day one was great, but I was a dumbshit about the drinking and was hungover by dinnertime. Day two blew day one away. We watched the NBA playoffs, then hit the pool. Ate at the seafood buffet in the Rio, then a trip to a strip club for the two bachelors (there were two guys getting married in our group). After giving a few $1's out, we were back to the hotel by 2a, where I more than doubled my money off of Ryan's brother's friends in a private poker game. Then Ryan's ass got crazy & wanted to play Black Jack, where I maintained my dollar amount. I got back around 430 today, and now I'm fucking tired.
Goodnight, beautiful babies.
By Jeff @ 9:13 PM
It's a good Monday today. I just got back from drinking with Adam & Dave (of the Smiling Tyrants). I'm home, watching Ravi Shankar videos on YouTube, drinking that last bottle of Lost Coast Stout while savoring bits of my Lindt Excellence 99% Cacao chocolate bar (they go together quite well, if anyone's curious). I don't have to be up early tomorrow, so I'm thinking I might put on some of my Ravi Shankar albums and sit in the dark and let the spirit take leave of the body.
By Jeff @ 12:27 AM
It's raining here in sunny Southern California. I fucking hate it. It's not that it's caused me problems, it's just that it inconveniences my motherfucking ass. Traffic. Umbrellas. Going to bars. Everything gets monkeywrenched just a little bit. That said, I'm hoping to get out tonight. I'm full of Chipotle & Dos Equis. Now to figure out something to do tonight...
By Jeff @ 7:19 PM

Today marked the half-way point for my management training. I ran the floor on my own. All my calls were the right ones. My floor was on lockdown today. The shift ran smooth. I made strong decisions. And there was no bitching or moaning. AND! My bosses had business cards made up for me! I'll post a scan soon. I'm stoked. I've never had my own business cards. From an actual business, that is. Then, home & a couple of lessons.
I've got tomorrow off. It should be a good day. A little Aikido. It's comic day tomorrow, and that's always good*. Venture Bros. Season 2 came out today. I'll be making a trip to
Best Buy an electronics store to pick it up. I've got a couple of lessons tomorrow, too.
Maybe I should read tonight..
*In case anyone's curious:
Ex Machina #27
Superman Batman #34
Ultimate Spider-Man #108
Ultimate X-Men #81
X-Factor #18 $2.99

I fell victim to a severe food coma after dinner tonight. I can only assume I crashed out at 7, only to wake up,, completely disoriented, at 10p. A "what-where am I-what time is it-where do I need to be-am I late?" half-assed wake up. I think I regained composure/consciousness by the time the Colbert Report replay came on at 1030. I contemplated reading for a while. I think that's what put me to sleep in the first place. I started back in my book somewhere around 1a. I had to veg out and get a dose of Futurama, Family Guy, ATHF, and (inadvertently) Saul of the Mole Men in. At 1, I picked my book back up. A small part of me hoped that it'd knock me out again, but to tell you the truth, sleep feels overrated right now. I've only got 80 pages left in Slaughterhouse Five, and I feel like I could jam right through it, and be done by 4a with enough time to get another 3 hours of sleep in before I have to get up at 7 for work. But alas, I'm done reading for the night. My eyes are starting to sting a little, anyway... blogging may not be the smartest endeavor right now.
In an effort to strain my eyes even more, I flip on the TV, and hit DirecTV's guide to see if there's something on. I mis-dial my channel and end up on KOCE, where "Bellydancing Fitness Fusion Jazz" is on. And I can't take my eyes off the TV. A bunch of bellydancers jamming and thrusting their hips in concert is one of the more welcome sights to behold at 3a, three hours before sunrise. And then a thought occurs; is this program scheduled to satisfy the demand of overweight insomniac housewives needing a new exercise regimen, or is KOCE throwing a bone (pun intended) to drunk motherfuckers staying up late, looking to rub one out? Were I a different man, I'd be in that demographic. Now, it's "French in Action." An educational show, aimed for the high school student. As lame as this show is, I can't stop wondering why the hot French chick is wearing such a revealing shirt on such a benign show... I gotta go to France.

Nor did I have any lessons or rehearsal. It's been a good day. I ran a few errands. Bought some comics (a good day for comics, btw). Went to Best Buy and bought Super Paper Mario for Wii & Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Only 16 years too late on that one.
I had Chipotle tonight. It was delicious. Pre-ordered a little Harry Potter 7 from Amazon, too. South Park was good this week, too.
You may have heard that author Kurt Vonnegut passed away yesterday. Sad news. I just wish I read more of his work. Maybe I'll get Slaughterhouse Five finished over the weekend.
